In the early 1960's Frank and Maria Drozdowski commenced a ceramic tile supply and fix business from their garage in Salmon Avenue, Armidale. The garage-based business grew and in 1968 Frank and Maria decided to open a small retail shop displaying and selling ceramic wall and floor tiles. The old gasworks showroom at 231 Beardy Street (now the Centro location) was chosen as the first site for the new business Armidale Ceramics. In the early days Frank would lay tiles for the local builders and the public while Maria operated the shop in the afternoons, making selections and processing orders. The business began to flourish and Maria's trading afternoons soon became full trading days, tile and associated product sales increased to the point where Frank retired from fixing tiles and focused on the supply side of the enterprise.

With the acceptance of ceramic wall and floor tiles as an attractive and durable material in the construction industry the business continued to increase and the old gasworks showroom was soon out grown. New premises were urgently needed and in 1978 the Ryan's Cordial Factory was offered for sale and consequently purchased. Following some small renovations Armidale Ceramics relocated to its current location at 271 Beardy Street, Armidale. At that time Frank and Maria's son Richard joined the company as Armidale Ceramics Sales Representative. In the early 1980's the old Cordial Factory was totally rebuilt to accommodate the expanding ceramic tile business.

Armidale Ceramics has been and still is a family concern. Following the retirement of Frank and Maria in 2003 the business is now owned and operated by Richard and Miranda Drozdowski. In its 45 plus year history Armidale Ceramics has been a part of the ceramic tile evolution from the humble beginnings of just a handful of plain 6"x 6" wall tiles and block random mosaic floors to the latest ranges of large format porcelain, stone and glass tiles.
